Former Freestate Players Continue to Receive Collegiate Honors

 

Former Freestate Elite player Martin Sanchez (USNA),recently was named to the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional team, one of only two freshman named to the 33-man squad.  Sanchez started all 17 games at centerback for the US Naval Academy and helped lead the team to a league best 12 goals allowed.  He was also named to the Navy-UMBC All-Tournament Team and was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week.  Former Freestate Elite player Brian Graham (UNCG), was selected to the Southern Conference All-Conference Second Team and the SoCon All-Freshman Team. Graham was also selected as the Southern Conference Player of the Week for the week of October 18-24. Brian is tied for second in scoring for UNCG and has registered 16 points so far this season. UNCG won the SoCon Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. You can read more about Brian at the UNCG Web site.

 

Former Freestate X-Treme player Nikki D’Orsaneo (Caldwell College)was chosen to the all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference first team for women’s soccer as the league announced its year-end awards today. D’Orsaneo has helped the Cougars to a 10-7 overall record this season, including an 8-4 mark in conference play.

This is the third all-CACC award for D’Orsaneo, who received honorable mention as a freshman and made the all-CACC second team as a sophomore. She currently ranks second on the team in goals with six and in total points with 14 while leading the Cougars with four game-winning goals this season. In a 1-0 victory over Felician on Oct. 29, D’Orsaneo scored the game’s only goal in a win that wrapped up fifth place in the CACC for Caldwell. She also tallied a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 81st minute, to lift the Cougars past Post, 3-2 on Oct. 12. After recording three goals and one assist in two victories, D’Orsaneo was selected the CACC Player of the Week on Oct. 18.Caldwell College Web site.

Former Phoenix player Olivia Tomoff (JMU) was selected Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the week ending August 29. The freshman defender helped shut out the Wildcats in the Dukes’ 1-0 victory against Villanova in the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational on August 29.  Tomoff and the Dukes’ defense allowed for one goal against St. John’s in a 1-0 tournament loss on August. 27. Tomoff was named to the All-Tournament team for the invitational. D'Orsaneo Receives All-CACC Second Team Honors In Women's Soccer
Former Freestate X-Treme Player is Cougars' Leading Scorer

CALDWELL, N.J. 10-29-09- Caldwell College sophomore midfielder Nikki D’Orsaneo (Bowie, MD/Bowie) was named to the all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference second team in voting by the league’s 13 head coaches, the conference announced today. D’Orsaneo leads the Cougars in scoring this season with three goals and three assists for nine points.

D’Orsaneo, who received all-CACC honorable mention as a freshman, has started all 16 games for Caldwell at central midfield this season after anchoring the back line a year ago. In a 2-1 victory at Felician College on Sept. 29, she scored both of the Cougars’ goals, including the game-winner in double-overtime. D’Orsaneo also assisted on the game-winning goal by senior forward Nicole Laureigh (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) in a 2-1 win at Post University on Oct. 13. She also had a goal and an assist in a 2-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom College Oct. 26. A relentless ball-winner who excels in traffic, D’Orsaneo has totaled four goals and seven assists for 15 points in 36 career games.

The Cougars, coached by Nate Guagliardi, are 6-9-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the CACC with one regular-season game remaining, a conference match at Holy Family University on Saturday, Oct. 31.

James Sweeney Named to All-Conference Team
Former Freestate Blazers Player Stands Out at Coker College

Former Freestate Blazers player and Coker College’s Freshman goalie, James Sweeney was named to Conference Carolinas’ All-Conference Team. Coker ended their season as Conference Carolinas Tournament Champions with its best-ever record of 12-5-1. The Cobras also received their first national ranking in school history and their highest regional ranking in school history during the season.

Brian Graham Heading to University of North Carolina Greensboro

Former Freestate Elite Player Brian Graham is joined by his mom Dianne, Co-Directors of Coaching Pat Noel and Steve Campbell, Bowie High School Principal Jane Spence and Athletic Director Bob Estes as he celebrates the signing of his National Letter of Intent to attend the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Graham was coached by Pat Noel and Steve Campbell during his tenure with the Titans/Elite. He was instrumental in the Elite’s State Cup Championship in 2008. During his high school career, Graham was named to the All-Met and All-State teams as well as the Prince George’s County All-Decade Team. Graham looks forward to continuing his soccer career at UNCG and plans to study Kinesiology.

Christine Nairn Garners Freshman of the Year and 1st Team All-League in the Big 10 Awards
Former Freestate Shooters Player Receives Unanimous Decision for Honors

PARK RIDGE, Ill.--The Penn State women’s soccer team swept the Big Ten individual honors for the second time in program history on Wednesday.  Head coach Erica Walsh was named Coach of the Year, while seniors Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) and Alyssa Naher (Seymour, Conn.) won the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year Award, respectively.  Newcomer Christine Nairn (Bowie, Md.) was tabbed the Freshman of the Year in voting conducted by the league’s coaches.

Nairn boosted Penn State’s production with steady play in the middle of the field, finishing third on the team in points (23) with seven goals and a league-leading nine assists.  She becomes the sixth Nittany Lion, and the first since Ali Krieger in 2003, to earn the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award.

Josh Patterson Named to Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie Team
Former Freestate Blazers Player Adds All-Rookie Team Honors to Freshman Accomplishments

Josh Patterson, former Freestate Blazers player, was named to Atlantic 10 2009 Men’s Soccer All-Rookie Team. Patterson, a freshman at Duquesne, scored 6 goals in 17 games for an overall point total of 12.

On October 26, Patterson was named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week. At the time, he had just scored his conference-best fourth game-winning goal.

Tiffany McCarty Named ACC Offensive Player of the Year
Former Freestate Shooters Player All-Time Points Career Holder at Florida State

Greensboro, NC., Nov. 3, 2009—Former Freestate Shooters player, Tiffany McCarty, who was named the 2008 ACC Freshman of the Year, had an outstanding sophomore campaign as she finished the regular season leading the league in points and goals with 36 and 15, respectively. She was just one of three players in the ACC to rank in the top 10 in points, goals and assists. Even more impressive were her numbers against league opponents in 2009 as McCarty recorded 20 points on eight goals and four assists. Thanks to a two-goal performance against Virginia Tech in the regular season finale, the Laurel, Md., native became the single-season record holder for points in ACC play at FSU surpassing Sanna Talonen who achieved the record with 19 points a season ago. McCarty is already the all-time career holder at Florida State with 31 points in ACC games, while she is tied for the school record with 12 goals and second in assists with seven.

Lauren Russell Named AMCC Player of the Year
Former Freestate Shooters Player

GIBSONIA, Pa. - Former Freestate Shooters player and Frostburg State University junior forward Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) became the seventh player in the program’s history to win the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Year award on Tuesday. Russell, a two-time All-AMCC First Team selection and 2007 league Newcomer of the Year, leads the team in several offensive categories with 27 goals, 16 assists and 70 points. She ranks fourth in the country in points per game (3.32), eighth in assists per game (0.79) and 15th in goals per game (1.26). The Bobcats have had a player selected as the league’s player of the year in six of the last seven seasons.

Kristen Wright Named Conference Carolina Freshman of the Year
Former Freestate Sharks Player

HIGH POINT, N.C.- Three Queens women’s soccer players have been named Conference Carolinas First Team All-Conference and freshman standout Kristen Wright has been dubbed the Freshman of the Year as announced by the league office Thursday afternoon.

Earning All-Conference honors are senior goalkeeper Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ), senior defender Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood ) and freshman forward Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside).

Christine Nairn and U-20 US Women's National Team are World Cup Champions

 

Congratulations to the USA U-20 Women’s National Team and former Freestate Shooters player Christine Nairn on winning the U-20 World Cup!!!  Christine assisted on two goals in the 3-0 win in the quarter-final game versus England, and earned consecutive starts for both the semi-final 1-0 victory over Germany and 2-1 victory in the  final versus Korea. Christine saw action in all six matches starting in four that the team played.

Christine Nairn represented the U-20 Women’s US National Team in their quest to become World Cup Champions in Chilie, Nov. 19 - Dec. 7.  It is a great honor for Freestate Soccer Alliance to have Christine represent the USA.  More information about the team can be found and the World Cup campaign at the following links: FIFA U20 World Cupwww.ussoccer.com and Christine’s personal World Cup Blog.
