Freestate North
Top-level soccer in the Baltimore County-Columbia area
Introduction

Freestate North will begin its second year of operation after a very successful first year, which saw a first place WAGS finish for our U11s and first place CMSSL finish for our U10s. Our U10s earned the championship title at Arlington Cup and were finalists at both the OBGC and Freestate Spring Breakout tournaments. Our U13s made the final at Arlington Cup and the semifinal of the Annandale Cup. Over the half of the U13s and half of the U11s were selected for the Maryland ODP team.

Freestate North is a girls-only U9-U13 satellite location of Freestate Soccer Alliance serving the Baltimore County and Columbia area.  Freestate North has quickly become the destination for competitive girls soccer players in this area. Beginning at U13 (the first year of ECNL eligibility), Freestate North players will combine with Freestate South players to form two teams – an ECNL team and a State Cup / CCL team.

Freestate North functions under the same philosophy of excellence associated with Freestate, providing players with training based on technique and passion for the game.

Most Freestate North events take place at McDonogh School, Fairland Park and Glenelg.  At McDonogh, Freestate North players have access to state of the art facilities, which includes newly-designed turf fields, a newly renovated Bermuda grass field and a fantastic indoor facility for the winter months. Training at Fairland Park and Glenelg are both on turf fields with lights.

The Co-Directors of Freestate North are Harry Canellakis, head varsity coach at McDonogh School, and Shannon Cirovski, former USWNT player, World Cup champion and Division 1 Head Coach. Together, they have steered Freestate North to a path of immediate success, with four teams in the first year and a goal of one to two teams in every age group (U9-U12) for the second year of operation.

Lou Webster

Lou Webster has been coaching at the highest levels of youth soccer since 2003. He brings a vast amount of coaching experience to Freestate North. During his years of coaching he has produced ODP standouts and numerous  county and state award winners for their accomplishments on the field of play at the high school level.  Lou's strongly believes that the basis of a great soccer player begins with a strong foundation of technical skills that are taught at the early ages and built upon as they mature into a successful player.

Practice Locations and Training Format

The U9-U12 practice format will include two nights of week of team training where the age group will practice on the same field, date, and time to train as an entire age group player pool.  One training session will be devoted to the entrie age group focusing on technical ability and the second night of week will be a practice session designed to improve team concepts.  An additional third night a week twice a month in the fall and spring will be a club Academy Night where age groups combine and receive technical coaching from coaches in different age groups and specialist GK training. This allows all coaches and players to be familiar with every player and team in the north program.

The Winter program will comprise of indoor training one night per week at the McDonogh School gymnasium, play in a Futsal league at Capital Sportsplex in Greenbelt, and each team will compete in the MD Futsal State Cup champioships.

The three main sites for Freestate North are McDonogh School, Fairland (Burtonsville) and Glenelg (Columbia). Teams train at the most convenient location for their group.  As mentioned above, beginning at U13, players will combine with Freestate South players in order to form two teams which will enter into the most developmentally appropriate league (ECNL, State Cup, VCCL). Once U13 hits, teams will again train at locations which best suit the makeup of the team, including McDonogh and sites in Columbia and Bowie.
