Over the past two years, we have been working really hard behind the scenes to become a part of a league that provided something different than our current options. We are really pleased to announce that in the past few weeks, Freestate Soccer was accepted into a new branch of the VCCL along with FC Frederick, Bethesda, and DC Stoddert. Many might also realize that several of the top Northern Virginia clubs joined the VCCL last year. The final piece of making this move, MSYSA league approval, also took place at the last MSYSA Board meeting.

The VCCL will provide our teams (U-11 to U-18) a club-centric league option that meets all of the expectations that create the best environment for clubs to foster the development and create the best soccer experience for each player (quality clubs/competition, quality fields, flexibility in scheduling, club-wide game days, etc.). Finally, the VCCL will serve as another option for our teams that adds to our existing relationships with CMMSL, BBSL, NCSL, WAGS, Region 1, ASL, and ECNL. During upcoming tryout meetings, we will be able to discuss how this exciting new endeavor will change the program offering for specific age-groups teams.

U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team forward Margaret “Midge” Purce is fast, fun and full of energy. We got the 16-year-old from Olney, Md,, to slow down for just a few minutes to answer 11 Questions for ussoccer.com, ranging from her experience being coached by a U.S. Women’s National Team legend to her thoughts on the Hunger Games [Spoiler Alert!] and how one day soon her big brother is going to get an L on the racquetball court.

 ussoccer.com: You came into the U-17 program a little bit later than most of the players who were selected to the CONCACAF qualifying team. Can you talk about that experience and how you made a quick impact on the coaching staff? 
Midge Purce: “It was a new experience coming in with the group, but everyone was extremely welcoming and I adjusted quickly. Everyone here plays at such a high level and everyone brings something to the table that is so great, but a little different, so adjusting to that was an interesting process to say the least. You have to be faster and your play has to be a lot better. So after becoming more comfortable in the environment, I really started to become part of the team.” 

ussoccer.com: How would you describe your style of play? 
MP: “I like to go at players and I like to play fast and get in behind, but I also like to keep possession when necessary. (U.S. head coach) Albertin (Montoya) says one of my strengths is getting in behind the defense so I am going to keep trying to improve that. I am still a student of the game and of course we are all learning so much. Every time I come to camp the coaches really keep adding more and more and it’s been really great. Even though my strength is getting in behind, I can still enhance that ability with better timing and positioning.” 

ussoccer.com: You and your teammates have finally made it to Guatemala for World Cup qualifying. Can you share your emotions with a few days left before the tournament starts? 
MP: “I think I can describe it as ‘pumped!’ I am so excited that I just want to get out there and play. Ever since they started talking about the qualifying tournament, I’ve been super excited. I expect to play some very good soccer against some tough teams and that will be a challenge and fun.” 

ussoccer.com: No one the U.S. team actually calls you Margaret. With the USA, you are Midge. How did you get that nickname? 
MP: “When I was little, like around seven, I was really small, and a few girls on my team told me I was so small that I was a midget. I said, ‘Hey, I’m taller than a few girls on the team!’ so they said, ‘ok, you’re just Midge,’ and it stuck. I used to ask my dad if I was small, and he always said, ‘No! Play big and you are big,’ and size was never an excuse or a problem.” 

ussoccer.com: You are coached on your club team, Freestate Soccer, by U.S. Women’s National Team legend and 1991 Women’s World Cup champion Shannon Cirovski (formerly Higgins). Did you know she was a U.S. Women’s National Team legend? 
MP: “Well, I’m very good friends with her talented daughter Karli and before I moved to their team she was telling me about her mom, so I looked her up on the Internet and I said to myself, ‘Oh my goodness, this woman is amazing!’ I remember going to her house for a sleep-over with Karli and I saw all these pictures of her playing and it was phenomenal. And then I saw all these videos of her playing and she was just such a smooth, smart player. You can tell by the way she coaches that she truly understands the game. She breaks the game down so well that the team is able to hang on every word she says and then bring it with us onto the field. She’s an amazing coach.” 

ussoccer.com: We must know: Team Peeta or Team Gale? 
MP: “I just finished the third book, literally 30 minutes ago! I have to admit I’ve been flip-flopping. In the beginning, I was Team Peeta. Then I was Team Gale. Now, I think, I’m back to Peeta. Maybe I’ll just go with Team Finnick, even though he got torn apart by a bunch of mutations. So sad; I almost cried…but I didn’t.” 

ussoccer.com: We know you love Shannon Cirovski, but who is your current favorite U.S. WNT player? 
MP: “Well, it’s really hard to decide between Team O’Reilly or Team Morgan. And of course there is Team Abby. I’m sorry, I just can’t decide. I’m not good with making these kinds of decisions. I’m the girl who chose Finnick. I just love all the national team players.” 

ussoccer.com: You say your brother JP Jr. (19 years old) and your dad, Jim Purce are great athletes and you compete against them in all kinds of things. Do you ever win? 
MP: “No. They never let me win, even when I was little. They always make me earn it. My brother always wants to race and my dad is more of a distance runner, but he’s still fast, and I am still trying to catch up with the big guy. Give me a few more years and I might get him! My brother is great at racquetball, but I am working hard on my game and I dream of the day that I take him down. We also play football in the street and it’s supposed to be two-hand touch, but it seems whenever I get the ball my brother thinks it’s tackle. One day, JP, one day.” 

ussoccer.com: You play forward for club and country. Can you tell us what it’s like to score a goal? 
MP: “When you score a goal, you complete a chain of events that every single person on the field played a part in creating and you get the satisfaction of making all that hard work come through for your teammates. Yeah, it’s a lot responsibility, you should finish goals, especially because all of your teammates have worked so hard for you, but it’s a way of saying ‘thank you for working so hard. Now I am going to get us that goal.” 

ussoccer.com: You are one of the few uncommitted players on the U.S. U-17 roster. Has the college selection process been stressful? 
MP: “No, I think of it as a great opportunity and such a great experience that I can use a sport that I love to play, something I truly love to do, as a means to get into very good schools. The reason why I’ve taken my time is that I don’t look at it as a stressful time, I look at it as deciding what path I am going to take for the rest of my life and I want to make the correct decision with no regrets. It’s not a stressful process, it’s an important one.” 

ussoccer.com: You’ve decided to go with the braids for the qualifying tournament. Do tell? 
MP: “Well, when I was younger I always wore braids and I also always wear green pre-wrap in my hair. So, for a while, I stopped wearing braids and I really missed them. They are easy, they are manageable and they are just plain fun.”

The Mini-Kicker Program is a fun introductory clinic for children 4, 5, and 6 years old.  The curriculum is a theme-games based approach to coaching soccer in a fun and highly enthusiastic learning environment.

During the program, we will introduce and play many fun-filled games incorporating the ball and movement coordination exercises.  You will see games using children’s movies and obstacles as the theme to developing ball manipulation, dribbling, control, and kicking skills.  In addition your child will: 

• Learn the concept and rules of the game
• Play and interact with other children
• Listen and follow directions
• Learn sportmanship, respect and fair play

The kids have a blast, parents and coaches smile and laugh, and together we have a great time enjoying the "beautiful game!"

CHICAGO (Dec. 6, 2011) -- The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team will end its 2011 with a training camp from Dec. 11-18 at The Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., that will be held concurrently with the U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team camp.

U.S. head coach Albertin Montoya has called up 24 players as he concludes activity this year and gears up for a big 2012 when the squad will enter CONCACAF qualifying in early March in quest of a berth to the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup later that fall in Azerbaijan.

Twenty-two of the players were born in 1995 (the age cutoff year for the U-17 Women’s World Cup) with two born in 1996.

U8 Program - The goal of the U8 Team Program is to provide an enthusiastic and positive learning experience through practice and competition for the player’s first year of select soccer.  As an extension of the mini-kicker program, this program is offered to 6, 7, and 8 year old children.  This program mixes skill development and futsal games to improve ability.  Sessions begin January 9 at the Skatezone, Crofton.  For more information click here

U 15 GNT Comes Together for Training Camp at The HDC

The U.S. Under-15 Girls’ National Team, under the direction of head coach Damon Nahas, will come together for a training camp at The Home Depot Center running from November 20-27. Nahas has called in 24 players, most born in 1996 and 1997.

Nahas has called in 24 players, most born in 1996 and 1997. All of the players are age-eligible for the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which has an age cut-off of players born on or after Jan. 1, 1995.

The roster does include three players born in 1995, which is the age group that will form the core of the team attempting to qualify next spring for the Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan next fall, so the coaching staff can evaluate them in a training environment for possible inclusion in future U.S. U-17 events.

Two Freestate Shooters U19(G) , Christine Nairn (Penn State) and Tiffany McCarty (Florida State) will be representing the U.S. Senior and U20 National Team, respectively this month.

Christine Nairn was on the roster with Senior National team on Monday, May 25^th as they faced Canada in a friendly.   Eighteen-year-old midfielder Christine Nairn became the first member of the USA’s 2008 U-20 Women’s World Cup championship team to earn a senior team cap, coming on for Angela Hucles in the 83rd minute. Nairn was the eighth player to be given her first cap by U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage.   The match was televised on the Fox Soccer Chanel. 

Tiffany McCarty will be one of 24 players that U.S. U20 Women’s National Team Head Coach Jillian Ellis has called into a training camp at the HomeDepotCenter in Carson, Ca from May 24-31 as early preparations for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Continue.

The USA dominated possession in a match played on the artificial surface at BMO Field and put together some excellent attacking soccer while out-shooting its northern neighbor by a 19-6 margin. "I am happy about the performance and I am happy that we scored a goal on a corner kick,” said U.S. WNT head coach Pia Sundhage. “That’s something we are starting to work on and I believe that come 2011, when the games are so tight, that set plays will be very, very important. So, four nice goals and a pretty good game on turf.” Boxx’s strike, which was the USA’s first shot of the game, was her second goal of the year after scoring just once in 2008 and it came against her club teammate on the Los Angeles Sol in Canadian goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. It was also Boxx’s 20th international goal as she became the 16th female player in U.S. history to score 20 or more goals in her career. The goal was created on the USA’s first piece of possession as right back Heather Mitts played a penetrating pass forward to Boxx from the right side of the field. Boxx dribbled hard toward the edge of the penalty area, and when no Canadian defender stepped up to challenge, unleashed a 20-yard shot from 10 yards right of the penalty arc that skidded into the lower left side netting. Canada’s only good chance of the first half came in the 43rd minute on a long free kick from Kara Lang, but the shot flew wide right of Hope Solo’s goal. The USA got a huge score just seconds before the halftime whistle after Heather O’Reilly fed Rapinoe above the penalty area on the left side. Rapinoe collected and dribbled toward her defender before cutting hard inside, losing Canadian back Brittany Timko. The nifty dribble created a sliver of space for her bending 16-yard shot that actually curved around Abby Wambach and her defender, who were screening LeBlanc, and then spun perfectly into the lower right corner. It was Rapinoe’s fourth international goal in just nine career caps. The USA struggled to find its rhythm early in the second half as Canada picked up the pressure, but settled down and regained control before putting the match away in the 77th minute after Wambach earned a corner kick on the right side. It was Wambach who jumped over two defenders to get a head on the ball, sending it powerfully toward goal. The ball hit Canadian captain Christine Sinclair near the goal line, but Tarpley pounced on the loose ball to force it over the line and into the open net. Wambach, who came into the match with 99 goals, will now have the chance to bag her historic 100th goal in her hometown of Rochester, N.Y., where the USA will play Canada in its next match on July 19. Canadian forward Christine Sinclair, who also came into the game with 99 goals, failed to hit the century mark as the U.S. defense did a fine job of keeping the star striker out of dangerous positions. The final goal came after O’Reilly ran down a long pass on the right flank and struck a hard cross from the wing that deflected off a Canadian defender’s foot, but it had enough steam on it to sail towards the near post. Cheney was making a hard near post run and deftly re-directed the ball with a superbly angled header into the upper right corner from about five yards outside the post. It was Cheney’s fourth international goal in 17 career caps. Amy LePeilbet got the start in the center defense with team captain Christie Rampone and played an excellent first half in her first cap since Sept. 13, 2006. She was replaced at halftime by Rachel Buehler, who also played an extremely solid 45 minutes, highlighted by a thunderous tackle on Canadian Melissa Tancredi in the waning minutes. Canada’s best chance of the second half came in the 54th minute as the USA lost a ball in the back, but the Maple Leafs couldn’t capitalize as Jodi-Ann Robinson launched her shot over the goal from 25 yards out. Besides the header off the corner kick that led to Tarpley’s goal, Wambach didn’t get too many clear chances for her 100th goal, but she did take a good swipe at a loose ball in the 62nd minute that fell close to her after a long free kick. The USA hit a flurry of shots in the second half, highlighted by an O’Reilly blast from the top of the penalty area on the right side, but couldn’t bust through until Tarpley’s 77th minute score effectively put the game away. U.S. goalkeepers Solo and Nicole Barnhart split the match, with Solo hitting some booming punts in the first half that caused some danger for the Canadian backline. Barnhart had a bit more to do in the second half in tidying up her penalty area, but was not forced to make a save. Eighteen-year-old midfielder Christine Nairn became the first member of the USA’s 2008 U-20 Women’s World Cup championship team to earn a senior team cap, coming on for Angela Hucles in the 83rd minute. Nairn was the eighth player to be given her first cap by U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage. The U.S. players now head back to join their WPS clubs and will not coming together against until mid-July for two more matches against Canada, on Sunday, July 19, at Rochester Rhinos Stadium in Rochester, N.Y., and then again three days later on Wednesday, July 22, at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C. These will be the USA’s first domestic matches of the year after playing the first five on the road and compiling a record of 4-0-1. The game in Rochester kicks off at 3 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on ESPN.
