For some players on the squad it marks an impressive "Cup Double" as they were also Maryland High School State Cup winners this year.

The U16 Wolverines and U13 North Red were finalists in their respective age groups at the 2013 State Cup tournament, coming up just short against very tough opposition.  The U13 North team had to earlier battle their "club-sisters" in an exciting semi-final against U13 Freedom Red.

Freestate Soccer Alliance and Waldorf Soccer Club join to create Maryland United F.C.

Freestate Soccer Alliance and Waldorf Soccer Club, Inc. are pleased to announce they have joined to create the Maryland United Football Club. Beginning with tryouts for the upcoming 2013-2014 season, the Maryland United affiliation will focus on the development of soccer players at every level through an emphasis on technical development and passion for the game.  Maryland United teams will begin at U-11 and run through U-18, on both the boys and girls side. This is not only a union between two like-minded soccer clubs, it is a move that will ensure competitiveness over a range of leagues on both the local and national level, including the Club Champions League (CCL), the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL), the Atlantic Soccer League (ASL), along with continued participation in leagues like WAGS, NCSL, and CMSSL.

Established in 2004, US Club Soccer’s id² National Identification and Development Program provides an opportunity for the country’s elite youth soccer players to be identified and developed, while also being scouted for inclusion in U.S. Soccer’s National Team programs.

A comprehensive national scouting and recommendation program is used to form a player pool from which top players are invited to attend an id² Program Training Camp.

The id² Program is an Olympic Development Program as approved by the United States Olympic Committee and U.S. Soccer Federation, and aided by their time in the id² Program, numerous alums have advanced into U.S. Soccer’s National Team programs.

There is no cost to the player to be scouted or recommended for the id²Program. Additionally, the id² Program is open to all players regardless of U.S. Soccer affiliation, or lack thereof.

id² Training Camps are invitation-only events that bring together the nation’s top male and female youth players for four days of competition, evaluation and fun. U.S. Soccer National Team staff, some of the nation’s top coaches as well as elite guest coaches and players attend id² Training Camps. In addition to the on-field sessions, id² Training Camps feature guest speakers, lectures/classroom sessions and other offerings, which make for a complete experience.

Attending an id² Program Training Camp has many benefits for players:

• An opportunity to work with some of the nation’s best soccer coaches, and to play with and compete against some of the nation’s best players in their age group.
   
• U.S. Soccer National Team staff on-site to scout players for inclusion in U.S. Soccer’s National Teams.
   
• Once players arrive at the id² Program Training Camp, the program is free of charge. There is no camp fee, and lodging, meals and training gear are provided at no cost by US Club Soccer and Nike.

• Recommendation/Identification:  Any coach is able to recommend qualified Players with national team potential for inclusion in the id² program by using the id² Player Recommendation Form. These player recommendations supplement US Club Soccer’s own scouting process that utilizes a network of key scouts at league games and events throughout the country.

• Evaluation/Scouting:  Recommended and identified players are considered for potential inclusion into a corresponding id² Training Camp.

• Invitation:  Selected elite players are invited to one of several id²Training Camps.

• Participation:  Selected elite players participate in an id² Training Camp, which are attended by U.S. Soccer National Team staff to scout players for inclusion into U.S. Soccer’s National Team pool.

• Selection:  Players are selected for US Club Soccer’s international tours, and U.S. Soccer staff selects players to attend U.S. Soccer National Team programs.

• There is no cost to be recommended or scouted for the id²Program.

•  US Club Soccer believes that capable players are sometimes overlooked for inclusion into the U.S. National Team pool because the players are not able to afford costly identification programs. The no-cost policy with id² ensures that these players are able to be identified and developed, regardless of income level.

•  For players selected to attend an id² Training Camp, once players arrive at the hosting venue, all player expenses are covered. Lodging, meals and training gear are provided by US Club Soccer and Nike.

• U.S. Soccer coaches and staff in attendance to scout at id²Training Camps.

• Familiar environment/no tryouts:  Players are recommended and identified for the program as they compete in their own training and game environment with their club teams.

• Lessens schedule congestion:  The program does not take players away from their club programs and game schedules on a regular basis.

• Apolitical selection process:  Recommendations are made and invitations are extended regardless of a player’s affiliation, or lack thereof.

• Success stories:  Numerous players that have been involved in the id² Program have advanced into U.S. National Team programs.

D.C. United, Freestate Soccer Alliance and adidas reach historic affiliate agreement

Washington, D.C. (December 19, 2012) – D.C. United and Freestate Soccer Alliance – in conjunction with adidas – today announced a historic affiliate agreement, the first of its kind for both clubs. Under the agreement, Freestate will be one of D.C. United’s primary sources in identifying and developing the top youth talent in Maryland. United will share its coaching resources and will work with Freestate to follow its training curriculum and system of play. Top players in the Freestate system, identified by both D.C. United and Freestate, will have the opportunity to join the D.C. United Academy teams, with a strong priority being placed on the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 age groups.

“Developing players to higher levels and preparing them for first-team action is the priority of our Academy,” said Sonny Silooy, D.C. United’s Director of Youth Development. “Our vision, which is shared by Freestate and several other local clubs in the region, is to connect the technical side and work together and bring players to their highest potential. Freestate does a great job a building a strong foundation for a player and, as an MLS club, we are able to provide even more opportunities for the right players.”

CHICAGO (Jan. 22, 2013) – The U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team will hold its first training camp of the year from Feb. 2-9 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

U.S. Soccer Women’s Technical Director April Heinrichs has called up 24 players for the training camp, with one born in 1994, nine born in 1995, and 14 born in 1996, which is the age cut-off year for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are eligible for the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, so the players that attempt to qualify for that tournament will be primarily from that birth year, but the top 1995s and perhaps 1996s may also be in the mix.

The U-18 roster includes five players who were members of the USA’s 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Team in Azerbaijan, including the team’s co-captain, Maddie Bauer.

The U.S. U-18 WNT training camp will be held concurrently with the U.S. U-20 WNT training camp, and the two squads will scrimmage against each other on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. PT. The U-18s will also scrimmage UC Irvine on Friday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. PT.

 Where are They Now:USWNT Midfielder Shannon Higgins Cirovski

Shannon Higgins Cirovski had the shortest tenure of the original legends with the U.S. Women’s National Team, giving up the game at 23 years-old, right after setting up both goals in the victory against Norway in the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final. She accomplished plenty in just five years and 51 caps, setting a playmaking standard for others to follow. She combined with Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly to create the most overpowering midfield quartet the women’s game has seen, and bringing to the National Team a technical and tactical acumen that was far ahead of its time. The center midfielder, who played under the name Higgins but has been known by her married name since wedding University of Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski in 1993, set the attacking rhythm for the team that won women’s soccer’s first great prize, then promptly retired to go into coaching and raise a family, tasks she found even more rewarding.

Those who followed the U.S. women in those early years know the gifts Cirovski brought to American soccer, and if she’s been somewhat forgotten in the 22 years that have passed since the ’91 triumph in China, it’s time to remember what she was all about.

“It’s funny, even the people who know [me sometimes forget I played for the National Team],” said Cirovski. “For instance, someone who works with me asked me for a bio. I sent it and he was shocked. He emailed me back: ’I forgot.’

“I don’t really push it either. I prefer to be anonymous.”

She’s been out of the spotlight since resigning her college coaching job following the 2004 season, her sixth, as Maryland’s women’s soccer coach, a decision made necessary by the immense pressures of a “24/7 job and three kids that need you 24/7.” That suits her personality just fine, but it also means the American game is missing one of its keener minds.

“She was an extraordinarily tactical player,” said Anson Dorrance, who coached her at the University of North Carolina and with the U.S. WNT. Cirovski was a four-time NCAA champion with the Tar Heels (scoring the winning goal in three finals), three-time All-American and winner of the MAC Hermann Award in 1989.

Dorrance brought her into the national team the summer before her sophomore year. “What I loved about her was she was like having a coach on the field, and I know that’s a cliché, but, honestly, I can’t say that about too many players.

“She knew how to run my offense,” said Dorrance. “She knew how to adjust to whatever was happening in the game, she didn’t need any advice from me on the sideline, and she was just magnificent.”

Cirovski never lost a game at Carolina, where she scored 28 goals with 35 assists in her final two seasons, and was an institution with the U.S. squad by its 11th game in history.

“I was always a great passer, and I had good vision and feel for the game,” said Cirovski, who was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame 11 years ago. “I knew where the ball should go to hurt the opponent, and I had the skills to get it there. And we had Foudy, who was just coming into her own, and Lilly and Hamm, who were playing wide midfield. Foudy was more of a slicing, dicing player, and I’m more of a holding. I complemented those players well.”

The U.S. had a tremendous frontline, too, with Michelle Akers, Carin Jennings Gabarra and April Heinrichs, and a solid back four led by Carla Werden Overbeck. They developed through the occasional international game, usually abroad - Cirovski had just 25 caps in her first four years with the national team - and in the Olympic Sports Festivals. Dorrance’s coaching methods, which prized competition and forcing players out of their comfort zones, made them into winners.

“We were a tough bunch,” Cirovski said. “And part of that was just inherent in what Anson taught us. He took all these females that had a will and basically stuck us in all these warrior-like environments. We kind of suffered together and grew together.”

They were steeled by the time the first World Cup arrived in the late fall of 1991, and headed to China confident of winning.

“In the last year or so leading up to that, we had won a lot of games,” Cirovski said. “We had all talked amongst ourselves, said if we don’t win, we’re not coming home. Those are the expectations we had.”

The Americans edged Sweden in their opener, then blasted Brazil, Japan and Chinese Taipei. In the semifinal, they conquered Germany, a side that had been tough in previous games against the U.S. Archrival Norway was last to fall, with Akers scoring twice with both assists by Cirovski, for a 2-1 victory, and the first world championship belong to the United States.

Cirovski had already started her coaching career by then. She was an assistant coach at George Washington University in 1990 and took charge of the program in ’91, before the World Cup. There was no pro league, little programming for the U.S. team - it did not play a game in 1992 - and no promise of a real future.

“It was a tough time to be involved back then,” she said. “There weren’t really any finances going into it, so I felt like I was being supported by my parents in a lot of ways, which was a tough thing to swallow. I could see [coaching] was the path I wanted to go down, and I just decided it was time to be an adult. I was ready to commit myself to the coaching side of things and obviously when my family started, I was ready to be committed to my family.”

She built George Washington into a winner, winning two Atlantic-10 Conference Coach of the Year honors and taking the Colonials to their first NCAA appearance in 1996. She stepped down after the ’97 season and spent a year as U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team head coach before taking the job at Maryland before the 1999 season. She quickly built the Terrapins into a winner, with annual NCAA trips and two Atlantic Coast Conference top coach awards.

Had she continued to play, she might have been a chief contributor to the U.S. titles at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She watched the evolution of the sport, and its surging popularity, with great excitement.

“Had I not had two daughters at that time,” she said, “I might have thought to lace them back up but by that time we were a family, and I wasn’t a Joy Fawcett who could pop babies out and run back onto the field.

“No regrets. I love the fact that I had the opportunity, and it was absolutely awesome watching some of my teammates have lengthy careers. But how can you trade your kids, you know?”

All three daughters - Hailey, now 18, Karli, 16, and Ellie, 10 - grew up with Maryland soccer, all of them played, and Karli has her mother’s drive and likely will play collegiately. They celebrated their father’s successes (Sasho’s teams won NCAA titles in 2005 and 2008) and weren’t ready when mom decided to give up college coaching.

But she took three years off, then got “roped into” coaching one of Karli’s teams, which was soon competing for national titles. “At that point, I couldn’t get out.”

Cirovski coaches the Freestate ECNL under-17 team, with Karli, and Freestate North’s premier U-11 team, with Ellie. When her kids are grown, perhaps she’ll do more.

“I would love to,” she said. “I don’t see myself personality-wise as a huge head coach. I realize I could play a really good supportive role. Right now I’m engaged in a nutrition degree and I have a tremendous interest in the psychological side of the game. Those types of things I think I could contribute.”

Dynamic duo go head to head!

Former Freestate standouts Christine Nairn and Tiffany McCarty will battle head to head as Penn State face Florida State in the College Cup Semi-Final on Friday night!

Both players are having outstanding season’s and are leading their teams in goal scoring. Nairn, Penn State, is 11th in the Country for total points with 43; McCarty, Florida State, is tied for 17th in the country with 37.

Former Freestate standout Jereme Raley is enjoying a prolific season with the Terps as he netted over Coastal Carolina leading the Terps to a NCAA quaterfinal date versus Louisville.

Terps’ Freshman GK Cody Niedermier is yet another Freestate alum featuring in the Division 1 post-season.

Patterson, the 2011 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, led the Duquesne Dukes in scoring in 2012 with 25 points on 11 goals and three assists en route to Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. In his time with the Dukes, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound striker registered 27 goals and eight assists in 73 matches. In 2012, he received Academic All-America Division I Second Team and Atlantic 10 All-Conference honours.

Christine Nairn

Nairn has played a big part of Penn State’s 2012 success, as she is one of two players in the College Cup that has posted double-digit figures in goals and assists. Nairn was named Big Ten Midfielder of the year and earned All-Big Ten First Team honors for her fourth year.

Nairn earned her first ever Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and first team NSCAA All-American honor, was a finalist for this year’s M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. Nairn finished her career second on the all-time assists list in program history and doubled her career goal total this season. The senior scored the emotional golden goal against Florida State in the national semifinals.

Tiffany McCarty

A native of Laurel, Md., McCarty is fresh off an excellent senior season with the Seminoles where she scored 17 goals and five assists in 24 starts, leading FSU into the semifinals of the NCAA tournament. The fast, powerful frontrunner was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2009 and 2011 and leaves Tallahassee with a whopping 63 career goals and 24 assists in 98 games.

“I’m really excited,” McCarty told assembled media just minutes after her selection. “The Spirit will be a very good team. My family is also excited that I’m going back home, and I know a lot of people back home in Maryland. I feel like it will be a very good experience for me.”

Why did Freestate Soccer participate in the formation of the ASL?

Freestate Soccer and several other USYSA clubs banded together in order to provide non-US Soccer Development Academy clubs in the East coast region a high quality boys league in a showcase format that has significant games, limits expenses, and provides a platform for player, team and club development as well as collegiate exposure and recruiting. Clubs are selected through an application process guaranteed to promote smart growth in underrepresented regions of the Mid Atlantic and also centrally organized clubs known for developing strong players and teams.

Why should players want to play in the ASL?

All ASL teams will have guaranteed acceptance into the following tournaments which have a great history of providing outstanding playing facilities and exposure to college coaches. Top players in this league are heading to schools in the ACC, Big East, CAA and also to NCAA Div. 1 and 3 schools as coaches know that best teams will be playing games at ASL events. One game a day provides proper rest after each game and Friday game days at events provides maximum college exposure on busy tournament weekends. Maryland/DC clubs include DC Stoddert, Freestate, FC Frederick, and Bethesda.

How will the 2012-2013 league structure change from this year?

In 2012-2013, the ASL will go to a single table format (currently teams are split into ASL 1 or ASL 2 based on the strength of the team). Clubs will also send teams to three of four events in 2012-2013. What we’ve noticed is that over the past two years, the variance in ability between the top teams and the bottom has decreased over the first two years of the ASL, due to strengthening of all clubs associated with the ASL. This also allows for Regional Games (club wide scheduled) for 2012-2013 and a greater diversity of opponents which is now limited by scheduling. Future plans also include an ID Camp for top players and an All-Star team heading to the Dallas Cup.

Over the past two years, we have been working really hard behind the scenes to become a part of a league that provided something different than our current options. We are really pleased to announce that in the past few weeks, Freestate Soccer was accepted into a new branch of the VCCL along with FC Frederick, Bethesda, and DC Stoddert. Many might also realize that several of the top Northern Virginia clubs joined the VCCL last year. The final piece of making this move, MSYSA league approval, also took place at the last MSYSA Board meeting.

The VCCL will provide our teams (U-11 to U-18) a club-centric league option that meets all of the expectations that create the best environment for clubs to foster the development and create the best soccer experience for each player (quality clubs/competition, quality fields, flexibility in scheduling, club-wide game days, etc.). Finally, the VCCL will serve as another option for our teams that adds to our existing relationships with CMMSL, BBSL, NCSL, WAGS, Region 1, ASL, and ECNL. During upcoming tryout meetings, we will be able to discuss how this exciting new endeavor will change the program offering for specific age-groups teams.

Two Freestate Shooters U19(G) , Christine Nairn (Penn State) and Tiffany McCarty (Florida State) will be representing the U.S. Senior and U20 National Team, respectively this month.

Christine Nairn was on the roster with Senior National team on Monday, May 25^th as they faced Canada in a friendly.   Eighteen-year-old midfielder Christine Nairn became the first member of the USA’s 2008 U-20 Women’s World Cup championship team to earn a senior team cap, coming on for Angela Hucles in the 83rd minute. Nairn was the eighth player to be given her first cap by U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage.   The match was televised on the Fox Soccer Chanel. 

Tiffany McCarty will be one of 24 players that U.S. U20 Women’s National Team Head Coach Jillian Ellis has called into a training camp at the HomeDepotCenter in Carson, Ca from May 24-31 as early preparations for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Continue.

TORONTO, Canada (May 25, 2009) – The U.S. Women’s National Team scored twice in each half, getting goals from four different players to defeat Canada 4-0 in front of 10,255 fans at BMO Field. It was the USA’s first match in Canada since 2001. Midfielder Shannon Boxx opened the scoring just 93 seconds into the match and midfielder Megan Rapinoe added a second just before the halftime. The USA put two more in the net during a four-minute span late in the game. Both second-half goals came from substitutes, as Lindsay Tarpley scored her 30th career goal in the 77th minute and 21-year-old Lauren Cheney knocked in a fantastic header in the 80th minute. The USA dominated possession in a match played on the artificial surface at BMO Field and put together some excellent attacking soccer while out-shooting its northern neighbor by a 19-6 margin. "I am happy about the performance and I am happy that we scored a goal on a corner kick,” said U.S. WNT head coach Pia Sundhage. “That’s something we are starting to work on and I believe that come 2011, when the games are so tight, that set plays will be very, very important. So, four nice goals and a pretty good game on turf.” Boxx’s strike, which was the USA’s first shot of the game, was her second goal of the year after scoring just once in 2008 and it came against her club teammate on the Los Angeles Sol in Canadian goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. It was also Boxx’s 20th international goal as she became the 16th female player in U.S. history to score 20 or more goals in her career. The goal was created on the USA’s first piece of possession as right back Heather Mitts played a penetrating pass forward to Boxx from the right side of the field. Boxx dribbled hard toward the edge of the penalty area, and when no Canadian defender stepped up to challenge, unleashed a 20-yard shot from 10 yards right of the penalty arc that skidded into the lower left side netting. Canada’s only good chance of the first half came in the 43rd minute on a long free kick from Kara Lang, but the shot flew wide right of Hope Solo’s goal. The USA got a huge score just seconds before the halftime whistle after Heather O’Reilly fed Rapinoe above the penalty area on the left side. Rapinoe collected and dribbled toward her defender before cutting hard inside, losing Canadian back Brittany Timko. The nifty dribble created a sliver of space for her bending 16-yard shot that actually curved around Abby Wambach and her defender, who were screening LeBlanc, and then spun perfectly into the lower right corner. It was Rapinoe’s fourth international goal in just nine career caps. The USA struggled to find its rhythm early in the second half as Canada picked up the pressure, but settled down and regained control before putting the match away in the 77th minute after Wambach earned a corner kick on the right side. It was Wambach who jumped over two defenders to get a head on the ball, sending it powerfully toward goal. The ball hit Canadian captain Christine Sinclair near the goal line, but Tarpley pounced on the loose ball to force it over the line and into the open net. Wambach, who came into the match with 99 goals, will now have the chance to bag her historic 100th goal in her hometown of Rochester, N.Y., where the USA will play Canada in its next match on July 19. Canadian forward Christine Sinclair, who also came into the game with 99 goals, failed to hit the century mark as the U.S. defense did a fine job of keeping the star striker out of dangerous positions.
